Photo Challenge: Free | Northern Virginia Photographer

Photo Challenge PROMO

Sometimes life gets in the way and that’s been true for the last month – finals, graduation, family visits, holidays, new job opportunities, conferences, moving, and more. With the stresses that came with December, we fell behind with our photo challenge. Indeed, it has been a challenge. This is a new adventure for us both and we didn’t realize just how difficult it might be to keep up. We are back on track now and apologize for the delay.

About Nikki’s photo: In the midst of the recent craziness, I was able to go to an amazing Christian conference for college students in Atlanta, Georgia called Passion. Though this is just an iPhone photo, it was such a powerful moment that made me think of Free — not only do we wonderfully live in a free country, but we are truly made free by Jesus Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection.

About Alli’s photo:

When we first got our dog Spock, he was a nervous mess. He was a rescue, and did not have much trust in people. For about half a year he would tuck his tail between his legs, and would hide. Now a year later, he is confident, happy, and free!

2015 Update | Northern Virginia Photographer

I have been MIA for a while and I apologize for that. A lot has been going on and it has all lead to some news for Chasing Now.

I have accepted a six-month internship with Group Mission Trips – an amazing opportunity and something I never dreamed would be possible. The bittersweetness of this is that I am temporarily relocating to Colorado. Chasing Now will not be able to take photo sessions in Virginia during this time.

I am very excited about this new adventure. It will be a wonderful way to explore my passion for ministry while serving to create mission trip opportunities for teens across the country. The news of this job came just as I was graduating from college (a very long adventure in itself), moving back home, and preparing for the holidays and family visits, so it’s been a little crazy trying to get all the loose ends tied in Virginia while preparing for my arrival in Colorado.

My photography is still very much a part of my life. Alli and I will continue to work on our photo challenge – I’ll just be a little farther away. Chasing Now will be back in Virginia, ready for action in August 2015, so don’t hesitate to book a session for later in 2015.

Chasing Now is currently booking photo sessions in the Fort Collins area of Colorado through August and in Northern Virginia starting September.

Photo Challenge PROMO

It’s the big reveal of the results of our first photo challenge subject: Bright.

About Nikki’s photo: When I think of bright, I think of several things: pops of color, sunlight, and brainpower — all of which bring a smile to my face. I wanted to incorporate all of these into my interpretation of Bright. The lovely Jillian modeled for me and her smiling face is exactly what I wanted to capture. Fun fact: Jane Eyre is my favorite book and I just had to sneak it into this photo!

Photo Challenge: Chasing Now and A Charming Heart

Announcing a photo challenge between Chasing Now Photography and A Charming Heart!

Photo Challenge PROMO

My friend Alli and I have very different styles when it comes to photography (and probably everything else from clothes to decorating haha!). Alli uses these awesome sculptures and creatures that she makes and she tends to focus on animals and nature. I am a people photographer — high school seniors, families, kids, you get the idea. I thought it would be fun to do a photo challenge to see how different our approaches to the same subject would turn out.

Our first post will be on Monday November 10th and we will post biweekly on both our blogs on Mondays after that. Want to join in? We will announce the upcoming subject the same day we post our photos. Just use the hashtag #AlliAndNikki and we can see your photos on Instagram.

Here are all the places to follow us along on our photo challenge adventure:

Class of 2014: Sarah | Fredericksburg Virginia Senior Photographer

Image

I was pretty excited for Sarah’s senior session in Downtown Fredericksburg. I just love her style! She’s got a killer wardrobe — she wears outfits I wouldn’t be able to put together by myself (I probably couldn’t even pull off those outfits anyway!). It’s no wonder she wants to go into Fashion Merchandising when she graduates.

She wanted to do something different than the popular Caroline and Princess Anne Streets, so it took a little bit of thinking outside the box. This session stretched my creativity and resulted in some of my favorite images of all time! Sarah rocked it. I wouldn’t have been surprised if she had been modeling all her life. Good luck with the rest of your senior year, Sarah!

Changes

I officially became a business in January of 2012. I had already come up with a name months before and had been working on building my portfolio for years. I’ve learned a lot since I first opened my business — how I want to run my business (still learning that!), I’ve begun to find my own photographic style (we’ll get to that in just a second), and I’ve learned a lot in my personal life (you learn a lot about yourself in your twenties, kids!).

Tomorrow I will announce new pricing for Chasing Now Photography. I haven’t changed my prices since I first opened my business. Chasing Now has grown a lot since I first started and it’s time my prices reflect that.

Want to see how much I’ve grown? Just take a look at a few of these Then and Now images.

Image

Katie, left, was my first ever senior to contact me for photos! Hopefully I’ll get to photograph her again someday soon to make up for being a beginner and having no idea what I was doing. 😉 [I used to call my business Christina Nicole Photography, but realized I wanted something different. The photo on the left was taken way before I found my new name. That’s an awful edit job on the watermark on the left! Haha]

Image

Again, my first newborn client on the left. I babysat his older sister and pretty much begged his parents to let me do some newborn photos for them.

Image

Look how much this little one has grown in the last two years! I’m not the only one who’s growing.

Image

B on the left is not a senior, but I wanted to show how I’ve grown in my posing skills, plus look at the difference in the angles and lighting!

Image

Now this family is very special to me. I recently did a Sister Shoot (blog post coming soon) and I have a shot of all four of the girls, but I just love how this one shows the affection among the older sisters. What a difference!

Image

And finally, senior guys are actually kind of difficult to pose. Girls can do all kinds of fun stuff, but it can be a little difficult to come up with variety for the guys. I love the top one because it’s my little brother, but I can’t deny that I’ve improved just a bit when it comes to photographing guys.

I know the families who received the “Then” photos loved them. They knew what my photography looked like at the time. Even I love those photos now. They show where I started and remind me of my journey.

I’m nowhere near where I’d like to be in terms of my photography. There’s always room for improvement and there’s always something to learn — especially in the photography industry. We always seem to be a little harder on ourselves, don’t we? I tend to compare myself to other photographers, but I am so proud of how far I’ve come since I first decided I wanted to shoot portraits. I hope you’ll be a part of my journey as I continue to learn and grow!

New pricing will be posted on my website tomorrow, plus a special offer (hint, hint: this week would be a great time to book a session!).
