2015 Update | Northern Virginia Photographer

I have been MIA for a while and I apologize for that. A lot has been going on and it has all lead to some news for Chasing Now.

I have accepted a six-month internship with Group Mission Trips – an amazing opportunity and something I never dreamed would be possible. The bittersweetness of this is that I am temporarily relocating to Colorado. Chasing Now will not be able to take photo sessions in Virginia during this time.

I am very excited about this new adventure. It will be a wonderful way to explore my passion for ministry while serving to create mission trip opportunities for teens across the country. The news of this job came just as I was graduating from college (a very long adventure in itself), moving back home, and preparing for the holidays and family visits, so it’s been a little crazy trying to get all the loose ends tied in Virginia while preparing for my arrival in Colorado.

My photography is still very much a part of my life. Alli and I will continue to work on our photo challenge – I’ll just be a little farther away. Chasing Now will be back in Virginia, ready for action in August 2015, so don’t hesitate to book a session for later in 2015.

Chasing Now is currently booking photo sessions in the Fort Collins area of Colorado through August and in Northern Virginia starting September.

Photo Challenge: Bright | Northern Virginia Photographer

Photo Challenge PROMO

It’s the big reveal of the results of our first photo challenge subject: Bright.

Chasing Now‘s Shot

About Nikki’s photo: When I think of bright, I think of several things: pops of color, sunlight, and brainpower — all of which bring a smile to my face. I wanted to incorporate all of these into my interpretation of Bright. The lovely Jillian modeled for me and her smiling face is exactly what I wanted to capture. Fun fact: Jane Eyre is my favorite book and I just had to sneak it into this photo!

A Charming Heart‘s Shot

About Alli’s photo: Cheerful flowers to brighten up a rainy cloudy day!

Photo Challenge: Chasing Now and A Charming Heart

Announcing a photo challenge between Chasing Now Photography and A Charming Heart!

Photo Challenge PROMO

My friend Alli and I have very different styles when it comes to photography (and probably everything else from clothes to decorating haha!). Alli uses these awesome sculptures and creatures that she makes and she tends to focus on animals and nature. I am a people photographer — high school seniors, families, kids, you get the idea. I thought it would be fun to do a photo challenge to see how different our approaches to the same subject would turn out.

Our first post will be on Monday November 10th and we will post biweekly on both our blogs on Mondays after that. Want to join in? We will announce the upcoming subject the same day we post our photos. Just use the hashtag #AlliAndNikki and we can see your photos on Instagram.

Here are all the places to follow us along on our photo challenge adventure:

Oh, and our first subject is Bright. Stay tuned to see the result next week!

About Nikki and Chasing Now

I’ve wanted to start a blog for a while now, but not just a “here are the photos from my latest session” type of blog. I wanted to actually have something to say. Of course, I don’t expect to have world-changing words of wisdom, but what in the world do I have to say? I decided the least I could do is introduce myself and CNP, share some of my latest sessions and clients, and give you a little peek at my life. So here goes the first part…

Who’s behind the lens?

My name is Nikki Piner, sometimes said by friends as if it’s one word: “Nikkipiner!” I’ve called Stafford, Virginia my home since I was seven. I earned a lot of experience babysitting my three younger brothers from a young age. I thank my older brother for that, since he usually “delegated” that task to me. This led me to begin babysitting “professionally” at twelve years old. Since then, I’ve worked with kids in a variety of ways: Vacation Bible School, Sunday school, nanny, youth group leader. It also led me to my passion for teaching. I am currently pursuing my Bachelor’s degree at George Mason University so I can become an elementary school teacher.

I grew up with a love of photography and first learned about developing my own film while on yearbook staff. After high school I realized I wanted to pursue photography as more than a hobby. I volunteered as the official photographer of the high school marching band while my brother was marching in it, photographed local theatrical plays and musicals, and even tried my hand at wedding photography (which, by the way, is not my cup of tea!). I transitioned to digital photography and finally fell in love with photographing families and high school seniors.

What does Chasing Now mean?

It’s living in the present, before it gets away — not wallowing in the past, or looking too far ahead, but truly appreciating the here and now while it is here and now. This is where Chasing Now comes in — capturing the beauty, the excitement, the real life of now so it can be preserved and cherished forever. One of my favorite quotes from Emily Dickinson says it simply:

“Forever is composed of nows.”

Here are a few other quotes that I think help capture the essence of Chasing Now. If you visit my website, you’ll probably see these and other quotes scattered around.

“We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand and melting like a snowflake.” ~ Marie B. Ray

This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24

“Go for it now. The future is promised to no one.” ~Wayne Dyer

“With the past, I have nothing to do; nor with the future. I live now.”  ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

I think that’s enough of an introduction for now (haha…no pun intended!) As I learn how to do this whole blog thing, more of my personality will probably be revealed through silly comments and pictures from my life and photo sessions.

~ Nikki
